Donald Logan Berry passed away on April 29, 2010 at Oakcrest Retirement Center in DeKalb after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
He was born in Batavia, New York on April 6, 1925; the son of Charles Logan Berry and Nellie Acer Berry.
Don served with the 29th Division of the 9th Army in Europe during 1945. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge.
On January 13, 1945 in Alexandria, Louisiana he married Mildred Culberson of Asheville, North Carolina. After the war they moved to LaGrange, Illinois where they raised their four children. For the major portion of his working life, Don owned and operated Suburban Trenching, an excavating company.
Don and Millie retired to Sanford, North Carolina in the early eighties where Don enjoyed fishing and working outside in his yard. He was an active member of the Sanford American Legion and volunteered three days a week. Having family and friends come to visit was always a special time for him. In 1999 they moved to Candler, North Carolina outside of Asheville. In 2006, Don received the Star of the Year Award from DayStay HBC Inc., for “always being there to lend a helping hand.” In 2007 they moved to Oakcrest to be close to their children. His grandchildren and great granddaughters held a special place in his heart.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, an older brother Lloyd, an older sister Gladys and his beloved daughter Donna.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred, a daughter Linda (James) Mason, sons Michael L. Berry and Steven C. (Gina) Berry. Grandchildren Ashley L. Mason, Ryan J. Mason, Megan, Marissa and Steven Berry and Nichole (Ty) Berry, and great granddaughters Morgan and Mackenzie Berry.
The family wishes to thank all the Oakcrest staff for the special care and support Don received during the last years of his life. And a special thank you to DeKalb County Hospice for taking exceptional care of Don and his family.
Cremation has taken place through Ronan-Moore-Finch Funeral Home. A celebration of Don’s life will take place at Oakcrest Retirement Center in the Bradt Chapel on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2:00 pm for family and friends.
