Margaret Mary (Klemm) Hammett age 91 of DeKalb, IL passed away on November 7, 2009 in the Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. Born on November 13, 1917 to Paul E. Klemm and Margaret Rose (Murray) Klemm in the house her grandparents 9Murray) homestead.
Margaret graduated in 1935 from DeKalb High School. While attending and graduating from Rockford Beauty School, as a cosmetologist, she also sang on a live Rockford radio station.
She married Clifford Donald Hammett Sr., on May 23, 1937, after which they started their family. She lived in the surrounding areas of Esmond, Elva, Clare, and settling on the homestead farm in DeKalb on Crego Road.
Her volunteer work spanned all of her life. It included: 4-H leader for the Afton Jolly Girls Club, President of Cortland PTA, Secretary of Youth Planning Council, and treasurer of the PTA. She spent 20 years as an election judge in DeKalb. She also served as a Eucharist Minister at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Margaret’s working career include: her first paying job working for Rudolph’s Garment Factory, from there she worked 10 years at Spurgeon’s Department store. At the age of 50 she went to work at the DeKalb Optometric Building until her retirement at the age of 88. In 2005 she became a resident of Barb City Manor.
Margaret’s hobbies were many. Playing her organ, piano, cooking, entertaining, needle point, sewing, and knitting, crocheting, traveling, and dancing.
She enjoyed having friends, co-workers, and family around her, sharing stories, laughter, playing cards and hugs. What she held closest to her heart was the dedication to her faith, praying for those in need with no questions asked. Also her beloved husband Cliff and the unconditional love she possessed for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death: her husband, Clifford Hammett Sr. two sons: Stuart Raymond, and Clifford Donald Jr, and a daughter: Susan Marie (Hammett) McCartney, one grandson, Clifford Donald Hammett III, and one great grandson Ryan Hammett, and her sister Lucille Donnelly. Survived are daughter’s Linda (Charles) Piske of Rockford, IL, and Debra (Michael) Murray of Hendersonville, TN, along with 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Private Funeral Mass and Visitation will be conducted in the St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb with Father Kenneth Anderson officiating. Private family burial will be in Afton Township Cemetery.
